How Can Neisseria Meningitidis Be Prevented?

My grandson s camp had a child die from Neisseria meningitidis. Children who were indirect contact with that child are being given a single oral dose of ciprofloxacin. My grandson was not in direct contact with that child but they did swim in the same pool and lake. Can the bacteria be transmitted that way and should he be given the medication?

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Meningitis can be prevented by taking meningococcal vaccine.
So vaccinate your grandson with this vaccine.
No need to give medication to your grandson as swimming don't spread infection.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your grandson. Thanks.
