How Can HSV 2 Transmission Be Prevented?

Hi i have hsv type 1 oral and get breakouts like 1 or 2 times a year. Recently i met a girl who is hsv2 positive. We were intimate when she was showing no signs of ab outbreak or during pre stages of an outbreak and i was wearing a condom. My question is because we were careful abd i already have some anti bodies because of hsv1 how risky it is to continue an intimate relationship.

Hi

Greetings from HealthcareMagic!

I can understand your anxiety in expressing the above things. Herpes simplex type 1, will be transmitted (from oral secretions or sores on the skin) through kissing or toothbrushes or eating utensils. Herpes simplex type 2 infection will be transmitted by sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be spread even when there are no outbreaks. Important thing here we have to remember is there is always risk of HSV-2 with your girl friend even though you were having antibodies of HSV-1. So be careful in your relation so that it won't effect your health.
Coming to diagnosis part, You can confirm by PCR tests and virus cultures.Coming to treatment part, there is no specific treatment except drugs like Famvir, Zovirax. Warm baths may relieve the pain associated with genital sores.

Take Care!
