Hello.

Your current line of treatment is correct. You have been given medicines which decrease the acid secretion (nexpro - esomeprazole) and that which increases the emptying of the stomach contents and prevents reflux (Ganaton - itopride). This should ideally be enough for now. That which you received earlier was somewhat similar, only had a higher dosage of nexpro.

In addition to the medications you should do the following:

1. Take small frequent meals. eg. 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones.
2. Avoid lying down immediately after food.
3. Avoid spicy or oily food.
4. You can also take Gaviscon syrup or Gelusil - both of which are antacids.
5. Rule out other conditions which may seem like gastric pain eg. a heart condition and a hiatus hernia.
6. To check the heart - you need to get an ECG and an echocardiogram. Treadmill test if necessary.
7. If you donot get relief with the above, the next line of treatment is endoscopy to see inside the stomach directly. You may also be treated for H. pylori infection either before or after endoscopy. If the stomach lining appears very much abnormal, your doctor may even take a biopsy to rule out malignant conditions.

Hope this helps. Wishing you good health.

Dr Geeta
