How A Fractured Toe Be Treated?

I tripped over a parking block and think I broke my big toe between the knuckle and big joint. It's been a week and a half and it is still painful to walk on. I've been wearing sturdy tennis shoes instead of flip flops. Is there anything else I can do for it?

Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

As per your description, fracture is very unlikely because fracture of big toe generally cause intense pain and swelling and you can not walk freely. Most probably it could be a contusion. But we have to rule out a fracture simply by an X-ray.

I suggest you to consult a general practitioner and get the following things done:
1.Take an X-ray of your foot to rule out fracture.
2.You can take simple analgesics like diclofenac for pain.
3.Apply ice packs over the area,it would provide symptomatic relief.
4.Immobilize the affected toe by tying it together with adjacent toe.
If your GP suspect a fracture, you have to consult an orthopedician and in that case you might require a POP(plaster of paris) cast.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
