High Fasting Blood Sugar. Frequent Urination, Frequently Thirsty. Am I Diabetic?

I was told by my doctor that I was diabetic because I had frequent urination and thirsty a lot. I had test taken and my fasting blood sugar was high. I do remember that night right before I started fasting. I ate two sandwiches and drank two glasses of orange juice. I went for my results and he said my fasting blood sugar was high. I ve been testing my blood sugar frequently 1 hour after meals two hours after meals and it is below 140 me I diabetic or not. I don t take any insulin either. I did but my blood sugar would drop to low.

Hello ,

Probably you are having impaired fasting glucose (IFG).

Your fasting blood sugar should be normal if you had fasted for 8 hours. Sandwiches and orange juice should not have affected it if your glucose metabolism was normal.

You have told that your after food sugar values are normal. Did you recheck your fasting blood sugar?

If it is still high you should take treatment.

Now treatment needn't start with Insulin.

First step would be weight reduction if you are obese.

Start on aerobic exercises , it will reduce your weight and improve metabolism of sugar.

Cut down on processed carbohydrates ,sugar , saturated fat.

Increase intake of green vegetables , brown bread , etc

In case lifestyle modification do not bring fasting sugar to normal level , drugs like metformin can be started.
