I have symptoms like mono, I had mono a year ago, i just had an advanced blood test for mono, which showed the past antibodies but no active or current mono. my throat culture also just came back negative. my cbc shows a hight white blood cell count. i have been taking penicillin , which made me feel better better right away, but throat still sore almost stings, swollen glands, very tired. What should I expect them to test for next? more.. I am 18, in college, an athlete, usually very healthy, although have been run down from athletic and academic schedule.

Hi, I am Doctor Mbong,

If your throat culture is negative and advanced blood montests negative despite the high white blood count and swollen throat glands (tonsils?) and fatigue, something else may be the problem.

Your symptoms may be due to a bacterial throat infection which may have not been seen in the throat culture if you took antibiotics before the swab was taken (bugs can be very sensiive to medication at times).

Your physician will probably look for other causes of swollen throat glands and raised white blood cells such blood diseases (with the aid of a complete blood count) and also rule out causes of fatigue like Rheumatic fever which is a common complication of strep throat.

Wish you a quick recovery and the best in your studies,

Dr Mbong
