High ALT Levels. How Long Will It Take To Decrease The Level?

How long does it take to lower ALT levels? 3 weeks ago my level was at 115 (I am a 43 yr. old female). Since the blood test I have cut cut out all alcohol and limited tylenol. I will be getting another blood draw tomorrow. Is there a possibility that within the past 3 weeks I could have lowered my ALT count? (I hope)

Hi and thanks for the query,

the level rise depending on the particular lesions. I am afraid the levels might decrease, but not very significantly.
After stopping alcohol, it usually takes a few months (2months) in order to actually experience remarkable decreases in ALT levels. You might need to be patient for some time. It would be important to also stay off some particular drugs that also lead to an increase in ALT levels like some drugs (Acetaminophen). It s important to inform your doctor or read the packages so well of the drugs you are taking for these might alter the results. Other lesions of the liver should also be excluded, if you have not done so yet like testing for hepatitis Virus B and C especially.

Thanks and hope this helps,
Luchuo, MD.
