Is It Bad To Use The Same Type Of Antibiotics Every Time I Get UTI?

Hi there, I frequently get UTI s and I ve been taking Cipro 500 mg for 7 days every 12 hours for treatment. Right now I have another UTI which isn t as severe as my other ones and I m taking Cipro 250 mg for 7 days to treat it. I do not have the opportunity to get a urine culture. My question is, is it bad to use the same type of antibiotics every time I get a UTI, should a doctor be switching the treatment up every time? Also are the dosages I m taking okay for what the severity of my UTI is? Thank you very much

Hello,

You are suffering from recurrent attacks of UTI. You have been taking Cipro 250mg for 7days. Ciprofloxacin is not the recommended medicine for UTI and so it is not working. You are suggested to get a urinalysis (R/E and C/S) done. You will be treated with the specific antibiotic indicated in the report. Take adequate water and fluids to flush out the toxins. In the meantime, you can take Norfloxacin - 400mg twice daily for 9-10 days.

For resistant cases it is recommended to be taken for 14-21 days. Norfloxacin is safe and effective in the treatment of UTI. Get clinically examined by a Urologist before taking the medicines. Finish the prescribed course, even if you feel better. Always take medicines after consultation with your local doctor. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
