Hernia Repair, Cramps In Lower Pelvic Area, Pain Radiating To Leg. Treatment For Symptoms?

My friend had a hernia repair and he has cramping in his lower pelvic area and some pain radiating into his leg. Yesterday he was told by the doctor who performed the procedure that the pain is from the three points at which the surgical mesh is attached (?) and he is being referred to a pain management physician for pain relief. I say, why treat the pain; fix the problem.
