Heavy Bleeding With Cramping During Periods, Irregular Periods, Thinning Hair. Have PCOs. Suggested Hysterectomy. Can Medication Be Tried First?

I am 34 years old and have had PCOS for almost 20 years. I took Clomid for my first pregnancy 10 years ago. Over the last 6-8 months symptoms have been worsening with heavier bleeding and cramping, more irregular cycles, thinning hair, headaches, etc. I saw a reproductive endocrinologist today who wants to do a hysterectomy. I am skeptical and just wandering if I should try meds such as birth control, metformin and spironolactone before such drastic measures as surgery.

Hi Dear,
PCOS usually causes amenorrea and irregular bleeding and infertility.
The cause of your irregular bleeding needs to be properly evaluated including Thyroid profile, Endometrial biopsy, USG etc. if not done till now. If your biopsy report is normal and USG does not reveal any abnormality, than you can very well wait, and be started on medical management.
You are very young and lot of alternatives in form of oral pills, Injectables, Intrauterine implants are awailable, which are good enough in controlling menorrhagia provided the workh up is normal.
PCOS as such is not an indication for hysterectomy
