Hcg Level High. Ultrasound Shows No Baby. Could It Be A Missed Miscarriage?

I am estimated to be around five or six weeks preg. The first day of my last period was April 28th 2013 leading into May. I normally menstruate for a full 7 days. I have been having my hcg levels checked several times a week for the past few weeks and my levels were 68, 108, 80 then today via the emergency room I was told it was 84. I was also told I have a corpus luteum cyst rupture, which accounts for the pelvic discomfort which prompted my er visit. My progestrone level as of yesterday was 4.2Two transvaginal ultrasounds can't spot a baby, sac or nothing. I was told I COULD HAVE had a missed miscarriage. I can't understand how is it that my level rose again? I am so lost as to what is going on.....

Hi and tanks for the query,

Measurement of serum BHCG should be done very carefully. The interpretation should be done very carefully with a careful consideration of the half life of the hormone. It changes within 48 to 60 hours (doubling time). Depending on when the miscarriage therefore occurred, it is very possible that the clinical scenario be compatible to the given laboratory findings. It is therefore very possible.

However, it would be advisable, to increase the certainty of the diagnosis, to carry out a Transvaginal ultrasound, which of course is very accurate within this pregnancy duration. The vitality of the fetus, whether living or not shall be gotten.

best regards,
Bain LE, MD.
