Having Severe Knee Pain. Noticed Blood In Stools. Life Threatening Disease?

Hello Doctor,

I am suffering from 2 major problems.
1.Bad knee pain on both my knees. I delivered a baby 7 months ago & ofcourse the strain in taking care of her is more & i m standing, sitting up on the ground many times a day. Also i have gained more weight during my pregnancy & baby's weight is more than normal as well. However i have reduced weight to a greater extent now, my weight is 60 kgs now. However the pain on both
the knees are intolerable. I am not able to sit & stand usually, it pains a lot & i used to scream whenever i get up.
2. Blood in the stool: I observed lot of blood in the outer portion of my stool & the water in the toilet turns red. This is there for the past 1 week. Would this be a symptom on any life threatening diease ?
Please suggest me why these are happening & how to overcome on these issues.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
As you are not an elderly female, most propably the pain in your knees could be due to patello femoral problems (commonly decribed as anterior knee pain). It is not a serious condition and settles down with the following measures -
* Avoid sitting crosslegged and squatting
* Use Analgesic prepartions whenever necessary
* Active quadriceps exercises
* Maintaining an optimum body weight

Coming to the second part of your question, Blood in the stools definitely warrants evaluation. Consult a general surgeon and follow his advise.
Hope this helps
