Having Mild Pain Lower Back. X-ray Showed Dislocated Vertebra. Cause? Exercise For Relief?

hey My mom is 65 years old, about a week back she developed mils pain in her lower back, which she relates started after she did some winter cleaning in the house.Over period of time her pain increased in intensity.she grades the pain as 5/10 on motion and 0/10 at rest.though for last two days her pain has improved, but has not fully resolved.she did went to see a doctor who said that it looked like dislocated vertebra based upon x ray finding and prescribed pain meds. i was wondering what you think could be the cause of her back pain, and do you think there can be any exercises that can be helpful?thanking you in anticipation

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing. It is very unusual for a vertebra to get dislocated without any amount of injury or fall. I am certain that the doctor you visited is not an orthopedic surgeon since no orthosurgeon uses the term "dislocated vertebra". Infact, I feel that it could be "spondylolisthesis"(movement of one vertebra over the other). Plain xrays of the spine reveal only the bony abnormalities and nothing about the soft tissues. So i suggest you to have an MRI scan of the spine which picks up all the problems in the spinal column. Also, in an acute episode of pain, adequate rest is to be given but not exercising the back. Hope this helps
