Having bruised and painful wrist. X-ray? Concerned

My daughter fell on her wrist at the skating rink about 30 minutes ago. I have it elevated with ice. She was not screaming after she fell but says it still hurts alot. Her wrist if very tender and alittle bruised looking. She can wiggle her fingers but doesn't want to bend her wrist at all because of the pain. Should I take her to the ER for x-rays? She is 9 yrs. old and about 110 lbs.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Pain, swelling, restriction of movements at the injured site generally goes in favour of a fracture (unless proved otherwise).
An xray is mandatory to rule out a bony injury.
Consult an orthosurgeon for opinion and advice.
Hope this helps

General & Family Physician Dr. Ralph Chambers's  Response
Hi--yes she needs an x-ray. This may only be a sprain but there is a particular type of wrist fracture--of the navicular bone--that, untreated, can cause necrosis (death) of part of the bone and long term problems. Just to be on the safe side, she needs evaluation for this
