Have The Feeling Of Having A Smokey Smell. No Medication Till Now. What Can It Be?

Yes, for about three weeks now I have had what appears to be a smokey smell in my nose, at first I thought is was something in our house burning and asked everyone in the house if they smelled it as well but they all say they
don't smell a smokey smell. In the last three weeks I notice the smell comes and goes. Can you tell me what is wrong?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms seem to suggest a disorder relating to the olfactory system which is responsible for sensation of smell. As no one else is smelling the same smokey odour it could be termed as Cacosmia. Don't panic, you need not get worried. It may not be cacosmia too. It could also be associated with changes in perception of taste function too. There could be many reasons for such altered sensory feeling from conditions in the nose to condtions outside the nose including sensorineural and central causes in the brain. I am not trying to frighten you here but letting you know the possible causes and the need to visit an ENT specialist to rule out nasal causes and a Neurologist to probe for other causes if required.

Sreenivasan
