Have Severe Headache Along With Lower Back Pain A Week Before The Periods. Diagnosed With Meningitis. What To Do?

I have had a really bad headache for the last day & 1/2. my head is sensitive to the touch and my lower back hurts. the last time my head hurt like this I found out I had meningitis. A friend of mind told me that she gets the same symptoms a week before her period and my cycle is due this week. I'm not sure of what to do now.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
No doubt you were a patient of meningitis last time , but it is not necessary that all time you have this disease.
Because headache is just from 1 and 1/2 day.
In meningitis usually there is intense headache.
But in meningitis there is also, FEVER and NECK RIGIDITY.
Perhaps you have noticed this symptoms last time .
In my opinion this time this is not a case of meningitis.
However causes of headache are many.
Tension , low or high blood pressure, fluid loss ( excessive ) anemia are many reasons.
So consult a physician and get in his opinion before reaching any conclusion themselves.
Hope I have answered your question.
If further any question I will help.
Good luck .

Hi and thanks for this query.

Severe headache can mean a lot of different things. Depending on the accompanying signs and symptoms, different possible causes could be identified. I will suggest that if there are no other symptoms, it could just be a primary headache(migraine, tension, etc).
I know your suspicion of meningitis has been heightened by the previous experience. However, very few headaches are meningitis and it is very rare without you reporting any fevers.

For now, stay calm. Take some pain killers for this headache. If symptoms should persist or get worse, then you should visit your doctor.

Hope this helps......Wish you good health.
Feel free to come back with more question or request for more information.
Dr. Ditah, C.
