Have severe constipation for which miralax was precribed

Thank you. I went to ER yesterday and was told that I have sever constipation. They took xrays. My upper left abdomen is distended. I was told take a bottle of miralax and split it between 2 bottles of gatorade. I did that at 1pm. The only thing I have passed is water.

Hi..

Constipation can occur due to a number of causes like sudden change in dietary habits, excess intake of dairy, taking a low fiber diet, lack of physical activity, stress, hypothyroidism, diabetes, irritable bowl syndrome, eating disorders etc..

I would suggest you to consult an Emergency room or a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like Colonoscopy, Barium Swallow, ultrasound etc to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treat you accordingly..

You can be advised to take high fiber diet, do moderate workout, take walk after meals, drink plenty of water, take laxatives and stool softeners like Docusate, fibre supplements like Psyllium..
You should eat every after 2 hours..
Go to toilet on the same time every morning and try to evacuate your bowels as it can help in developing habit of regular bowels..You can be advised prescription drugs like Lubiprostone and Lincolotide..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

10 years ago I had a cancerous polyp removed and wore a ostomy bag for 4 months then had the take down surgery. I have had colonoscopies every 4 years since and every thing was fine until a month ago and I had a change in bowel habits, severe constipation. I took stool softeners and laxitives and finally a suppository which removed the problem, I thought. For a few days all was better. Now I have gone 4 days no bowel movement I have taken all the steps as previously mentioned. I used several suppositories at different times with only thing happening was melted suppository there does not seem to be anything in the colon or lower area to move out. The dr. told me to take the miralax which I did three times and nothing except vomiting. The miralax causes severe nausea. I am now constantly belching and my upper stomach is so uncomfortable and I have not eaten anything solid for 36 hours and I am afraid too. My dr. is scheduling me a colonoscopy but that is probably over two weeks a way, I don t think this can go on for that long.. what can I do, and I don t think the prep for colonoscopy would work right now.

Hello - Wife is 65 years old and suffers from extreme constipation. She receives excellent medical care, UNC & Duke graduates, but neither her primary physician or her plethora of specialists seem to be able to offer practical suggestions. Situation resulted from surgery in 2001 four “flat back” syndrome secondary to scoliosis. Nerve damage occurred during surgery with many negative outcomes, such as, chronic pain, bladder and bowel dysfunction, some paralysis in right leg. She manages well, in spite of, these difficulties and prior to surgery was high functioning in very responsible position. She takes heavy narcotics for pain which, of course, contributes to her problem. Also, she takes Miralax and copious fluids. Bowel movements are unpredictable and can take hours to complete. This part of her disability severely constricts her quality of life. Are there any suggestions, short of a colostomy, which might alleviate her symptoms of constipation, as well as, relieving the constipation itself. I understand this is a complicated medical situation, but I am interested only in the bowel management issues. Any suggestions? Any recommendations? Any solutions? Thanks very much for your time and attention to this problem. Regards, William

I am a 48-year-old, Caucasian female. I have been experiencing constipation alternating with diarrhea . There is always a pinkish to red mucus discharge with the bowel movement . This can be seen in the stool or separate - such as when I have diarrhea - and then the mucus is actually separate from the stool. It appears in a blob or ball like formation, kind of fluffy, and can range from pink to red in color. I am a cancer survivor (cervical/uterine and Thyroid). Recently (2011) diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis . I currently work for a physician but do not wish to ask. Any information - and I know it is not a diagnosis - would be appreciated.

Just this june i was diagnosed as HIV positive and i suspect that this long term disease that i got is ileocecal TB since it s an infection or opportunistic infection can be brought by the virus itself. I undergone colonoscopy and endoscopy 2 years ago but still the doctor couldn t find what s the cause of this chronic constipation and the like. That s why i suspect it s ileocecal TB. pls. advise me doc what to do. tnx and more power...
