Have Problem With Bite. Wearing Night Guard. Reason For Forward Bite?

Hi, I have a problem with my bite my two teeth on my left side touch only, and the rest of my teeth are seperated by 2-3mm. I have had this problem for many years. however over the past 3-4 it has got worse. I was told many years ago that i grind my teeth, i started to wear the night guard which i purchased from the internet this kept my teeth apart during the night and so the tmj pain decreased, i was wondering if this is the reason for my open bite? look forward to hearing from you soon, attia.

Hi and welcome.
Deep bite and sharp cuspal edges of the teeth often lead to grinding of upper and lower teeth against each other which cause severe attrition. In chronic cases , attrition may progress in formation of deep cavities exposing the underlying tooth nerve tissue leading to sensitivity and pain. Improper bite may lead to severe pain and discomfort of TMJ joint .
Instead of using night gaurds from internet , i suggest you to consult a prosthodontist and get the exact evaluation done of your occusal bite and anterior bite. Accordingly a night guard can be made and occusal harmony can be acheived.
i hope this helps you , take care.

Hi,
Thank you for the query.
Usually patients with a habit of night grinding end up with TMJ probelms such as dislocation of the disc leading to loss of occlusion which presents with open bitesometimes . It could be incomplete overbite . This open bite could be because of the TMJ problem . Get an OPG done and see an orthodontist to rule out the exact cause for the open bite and pain . It can be treated by using a head gear or corrective surgery or using braces,.First TMJ probelm has to be treated if present followed by treatment of open bite .
Hope this information helps you

hello attia
persons having habit of bruxism or teeth grinding during night often suffer from tmj problems including pain and in advanced stages open bite
now as per your information you bought a night guard from internet and used it for sometime
what i would advise is that you pay a visit to your dentist prferablly orthodontist who will than take an impreesion of your existing teeth and also have a radiographic examination of your tmj
having done that he will either make a night guard or head gear meant for you according to shape and size of your teeth and /or jaw...also he may use braces to correct your occlusion
that will definately help you reduce and subsequently end up with your pain and open bite
surgery of tmj is another option but that goes at very advanced stage of problem and i hope that...thats not the case with you
best of luck

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Deep bite often give rise to biting problems. Grinding of teeth leads to occlusal wear of the tooth leading to pain and sensitivity. It can also lead to TMJ problems.
Instead of getting the night guard from the internet i would suggest you visit to the Prosthodontist get the checkup done take an OPG radiograph give the upper and lower impressions and get the night guard prepared.
Follo the instructions given by your Dentist properly.

Hope this helps out,

Regards...

HELLO ATTIA
THE SEVERITY AND TYPE OF YOUR OPEN BITE HAS TO BE STUDIED FIRST BY SOME ORTHODONTIST. YOUR CEPHALOGRAM SHOULD BE DONE...THIS WILL HELP THEM TO MAKE A PROPER TREATMENT PLAN.. DEAR YOU FORGOT TO MENTION YOUR AGE WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ORTHODONTIC TREAMENTS.. SO BE SPECIFIC AND DESCRIPTIVE WHILE CONSULTING AN ORTHODONTIST.. WHEN YOU HAVE AN OPEN BITE IF YOU SAY ITS POSTERIOR YOU MUST ALSO FIND DIFFICULTY IN EATING AND CHEWING FOOD..
THERE CAN BE A DENTAL DEFORMITY AS WELL AS A SKELETAL DEFORMITY IN YOUR CASE OS IF IT IS BOTH YOU MAY NEED A ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY AND THEN A FIXED ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT.. BUT IF IT IS ONLY DENTAL YOU CAN GO FOR A FIXED ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT ONLY..
HOPE IT HELPS..
THANK YOU

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Prolonged use of night may be caused such kind of open bite.

I would advice you to visit a dentist and get the evaluation done.

Such treatments has to be safely done under dentist's supervision.

If required, orthodontic appliances has to be placed to correct the bite as well as occlusion of teeth.'
Hope this helps.
