Have Papllidema With Flashes Of Light, Swelling Comes From Spinal Tap. PRescribed Imitrex. What To Do ?

Hi there I have papllidema with flashes of light and my eye doctor did an MRI. Clear. The next step to figure where the swelling is come from is the spinal tap. But the neurologist wrote a prescription for imitrex instead. He did not recommend the lumbar and told me that yes my optic nerves are swollen but not to worry about it. But I am.

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hi..
Thanks for the query..
papilledema can have various causes..
By doing MRI/CT scan any space occupying lesions of the brain are ruled out..
If MRI comes out clear just don't worry..
There are other reasons in the eye also for papilledema.
What is the vision in the eye with papilledema?
Are you a hypertensive or obese?
In obese persons there can be benign intracranial hypertension which causes papilledema..
If you are a hypertensive there will be associated changes in the retina..
Any tumours in the orbit should also be ruled out by CT/MRI orbits...
A lumbar puncture should not be performed when there is a papilledema unless it is necessarily indicated..
A complete eye check up can be done including peripheral retinal evaluation and visual fields test if required...
Consult an ophthalmologist just to make sure that any eye related problem is not picked up..
Hope this information helps you.. Take care..
