Have Ovarian Cysts, Fibroids On Uterus. Increased CA-125 Levels. Need For Hysterectomy?

I m scheduled to have a hysterectomy on October 8th and I m unsure if this is the correct thing to do. I m having the surgery for multiple reasons--I have cysts on my ovaries, fibroids on my uterus , and ultrasounds now show that both ovaries appear to be adhered to my uterus. My doctor and I have tried treating this with hormones over the past year, but they gave me constant headaches and I had to stop taking them. His advice was to perform the hysterectomy because my CA-125 levels had risen, and it seemed the (assumed) endometriosis had gotten worse (when I started seeing him, only one ovary was adhered to my uterus. I ve just started reading the forums filled with women who regret having the surgery. Weight gain, hormonal embalance, fatigue, etc, are things that they describe. I don t know what my other options are at this point. Am I doing the right thing?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
Medical treatment for Endometriosis is never definitive, as the condition tends to recur once the treatment is withheld.
Ca-125 is normally raised in endometriosis.
It is very difficult to say what is best for you without knowing the details about your age, symptoms, fertility, treatment history & your expectations etc.
If you want a specific answer, please opt for a direct query with full details of your history & lab reports.
Take care.

OBGYN Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The raised levels of CA-125 are suggestive of increased chances of having an ovarian malignancy. If the fibroids are large in size with symptoms like heavy bleeding during periods then hysterectomy is advisable.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
