Have Nasal Congestion, Runny Nosing, Eye Itching, Shortness Of Breath. Severe During Winter. Relief With Cetrazine. Diagnosis?

Hi Doctor,

I have had this thing from last 15 years. I have problem like nasal congestion, clear runny nose, nose and eye itching, shortness of breath.

Summer: - Usually I remain fine in summer season. 5-6 months (Mar -August)

Autumn: - from September, problem starts with eye itching in inner corner. Sometimes these became insanely itchy. After 7-8 days, itching starts in nose also. Sometimes I had to blow nose harder due to itching which starts nasal congestion and inflammation. Also very sore throat.

Winter: - from mid October, there would be some relief from eye itching, But other symptom become severe like nasal congestion, sore throat, clear runny nose, sneezing. Some days, running nose and congestion became so severe that I have to blow every single minute. Also my sight get blur and water produce from my eyes.

November onward, problem become severe. I also start having issues with congestion in my chest, shortness of breath, chest pain, infection, bad cold and sore throat. Most of days, I could not sleep properly due to difficulty in breathing and nasal congestion. When cold increases, my problem also gets increase.

To treat this, I take number of medicine, but mostly cetirizine. These give some relief from nose but increase chest problem. I don’t take any medicine daily. I take medicine, when problem get out of control.

My health becomes normal in mid march.

There is lot of travelling in my job and problem remain almost same in every location in winter season.

In winter, it feels difficulty with social and physical activities. Please help me to identify this disease and suggest some medicine so that I could live quality of life.

Dear Friend
It seems from your query that you are suffering from allergic rhinitis. Shortness of breath can be due to brochial asthma also. However, it can occur during an acute episode of allergic rhinits.
Do you have any wheezes?

Allergic rhinitis as the name indicates usually occurs as a result of some aleergic response by some stimuli, that can be anything, like smoke, dust, cotton , hay fibres and a long list.

Its difficult, still try to find out the source of allergen and try to avoid it.

Do regular steam inhalations.

Meet a doctor, he will listen to your chest and may do some tests like Haemogram, Absolute Eosinophil count, X - ray chest, spirometry, if he feels is required to confirm.

Because if you have bronchial asthma, you need to add a few more medications based on the symptoms you told.
