Have Left Chest Discomfort, Sore Calves, Belching And Arm Discomfort. Should I See A Doctor?

Hi,I am 28 yr old female with no major heart problem history other than a murmur and an afib . For the last five days I hav had some left side chest discomfort that comes and goes, sore calves, left shoulder and arm discomfort and sob. The arm discomfort stays there,I also have some upper abdominal discomfort with a lot of belching ,do I really need to go to the er? Or should I try something over the counter?

Hello Ms Mbugua,

Heart murmur with atrial fibrillation is a significant heart condition. Sore calves with chest discomfort, especially shortness of breath for 5 days, gives a suspicion of a venous thrombosis (clotting of blood) with lodging of small clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism). This is of greater importance, if you were on oral contraceptives. You need tests to rule out lung involvement at the earliest. No over-the-counter medications will help you.

The abdominal discomfort and belching may or may not be related to the main problem. What medicines are you on? Have you stopped any clot preventing drugs prescribed for atrial fibrillation? Worrying point is the arm discomfort, which stays there. Probability of a clot from fibrillating atrium getting lodged in a major limb artery also needs consideration.

Do not delay any further. Get proper medical help.
