Have Knee Pain. Diabetic. In Anti-diabetic Medicines. What Is The Reason?

I am a diabetic patient for last 8 years. My PP has been for last 2 years average 160-200. Taking anti-diabetic drugs regularly with some diet control.

For last 2-3 months, my knee is giving some problem only during climbing or getting down by stairs. Other than this, there is no other problem in knee. Please advice.

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
After going through your history, you are having Diabetes type II with reasonable control of blood sugar level. There is room for some improvement for control of diabetes.
Pain in the knee could be due to various causes Osteoarthritis, internal injury to knee joint, other types of arthritis.
Please consult a Physician/ Orthopaedic surgeon, after proper examination a Complete blood count, RA Factor, Uric acid, Anti CCP antibody, and MRI of knee joint will give clear picture and treatment would depend on cause.
In the mean time local hot fomentation, rest and simple analgesic like paracetamol will give some relief.
If you are overweight reducing weight will help.
Hope this information is useful to you.
Take care.
Good Luck.

Hello,
Although blood sugar levels near normal, but you can still improve these results a bit more good by proper control of diet and necessary change in anti diabetic medications if PP starts hovering above 200.
Ideally it would be better to keep it around 160 - 170.
A far as your pain in knees is concerned, the symptoms point towards the age related degenerative problem ( osteoarthritis ).
Treatment lies in taking anti inflammatory medications, avoiding putting pressure on the affected knee and quadriceps exercises of knee.
You may consult a orthopaedic and get yourself evaluated and then take the help of a physiotherapist for proper exercises schedule.
Thanks

hello Mr Biswadeep Datta,

after long time diabetes, even before its detection, there will be deposition of the glucose on the collagen fibers which cause some chemical reaction, causing a compound called glycosylated collagen, which deteriorates the quality of collagen and hence there are joint problems.

take some analgesics, take the help of physiotherapist if continues, regular glycemic control would help you to relief of symptoms.

wish you good health

Hi Biswadeep Datta,
Thanks for using HCM.
Since your sugar is controlled no need to worry for diabetes. Usually around the age of 50 and little early in over weight and obese patients osteoarthritis will occur and cause pain in the joint it affects. Knee is most commonly affected joint. Look for any restriction in the range of movement, any swelling or sound during movement. These are the signs for OA. Get done once X Ray to diagnose it. You can take Glucosamine sulphate and mild pain killer for pain and curcumin will be helpful to deley its progression. There are other causes but OA is most common one. Consult your doctor for examination and management.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards
Dr.Lohit

Dear sir/madam

Osteoarthritis is very common in patients with diabetes, knee pain which aggravates on climbing and getting down is associated with osteoarthritis.
So try to supplement with elemental calcium and vitamin D3 which improves the condition and now a days Vitamin D3 is recommended for diabetes patients.
Thanks
