Have Irregular Period. Taking Fertility Drugs And Done IVF. Done Sugar Test And Liver Test. Will Hormonal Pills Help?

My name is Seema.I am 31 year old divorced woman.I have irregular period since the age of 23 year.During my married life i took many fertility drugs & went through IVF twice without any result. Finally I stopped trying for having kids of my own & took divorce. However,I wanted to remain healthy & wanted to have regular periods. For the same, I consulted many gynecologist in delhi & mumbai ,everybody suggested for pills to regularize my periods. Thus,i can say I am taking krimson-35 pills every month continuously since the last 6 years. Whenever I stopped taking krimson-35 pills,my periods again become irregular, thus I start taking these pills again. Please advice is it safe to take these pills continoulsy throughtout my life or not.On doctor's advice i get LFT(LIVER function test, sugart test etc. done, the test results are fine. However,I am worried since i am taking these pills continuously for last 6 years,is it okay or not or i should stop taking it.I just wanted to remain healthy by .One doctor advice me that you need not to consult doctor to regularize your periods again & again as you have to take these hormonal pills throughout your life to remain healthy. Please advice if I am doing right to continuously taking these pills since 6 years & continue taking it throughout my life or not.Kindly advice.

Hi,

I perfectly understand your concern for long term use of these pills.
Long term use of these pills is associated with side effects especially after the age of 35 years.
However I would be glad to know the reason for irregular periods, was it PCOD or thyroid hormone dysfunction or failure of ovaries.
Now about the need to menstruate. To protect against cancer it is required to menstruate atleast once every 3 months. To protect against thin bones the hormone estrogen needs to be present in the body in normal levels.

I suggest that you stop the pills and wait for your natural menses to come. then get a hormone profile done. If there is any abnormality treat it after consulting an endocrinologist. If there is no treatable abnormality and estrogen levels are normal, only take tablets like medroxyprogesterone for 7-14 days every two or three months and wait for menses. This should be enough for you to keep you healthy.

Hope this was helpful.
Thanks and have a good day.

Hi,
You say you had tried well for conception before this. That means, all the investigations were done & the cause of lac of periods have been found out.
Krimson 35 is mainly used for treatment of PCOD. on long run it brings about weight gain ,swelling on legs, breast engorgement, gastrointestinal upsets .
Your LFT & sugar tests are normal. Still effect of any drug lifelong does have side effects ,depending body chemistry of the individual. If you want to continue with the drug life long ,you will have to have a complete medical check up regularly.
If you ask me, please show all your reports to an Endocrinologist & Gynecologist. The treatment of amenorrheoa depends on the causative factor. To have periods by treating basic cause will impart a good health, rather having witdrawl bleeding every month.
Thanks.
