Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

The problems of burning on urination and blood in the urine may be as a result of an infection in some part of the urinary tract. If it has progressed to back pain, it is possible that the infection may involve the kidneys.

The urinary tract consists of the urethra, the bladder, the ureter (connects the kidneys to the bladder) and the kidneys.

The increased size of her legs can be due to possible problems with the liver or the kidneys or the heart or low protein levels in the blood or due to problems with the veins in the legs.

To find out the cause she would need to see her doctor for an assessment.Blood test can be taken to check the kidneys or the liver.
If it is related to the veins your mother would notice: enlarged veins in her legs, no swelling on waking up but after moving about during the day. This is treated by keeping the legs up as much as she can during the day and also by using special stockings.

Treatment of the infection would involve: drinking fluids and antibiotics.

I hope this helps

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

First of all I respect you for caring so much for your mother and taking care of her, it is really difficult to find individuals like you in today's world.

Now coming to your query and the advice I have to offer. You need to understand that we first need to find the cause, and only then initiate treatment. To find the cause we need some cost-effective and accurate investigations. So let us come to that one by one, okay?

Starting with the current most troubling thing, which is the burning sensation while urinating and blood in the urine. These are clear indications of a possible urinary tract infection. We will need to conduct a urine analysis and a urine culture examination for this. These 2 investigations will confirm the infection and due to your mother's age, she might be resistant to many antibiotics, which is why I have advised the urine culture examination, this will provide information on the best medicine that can be used to treat her infection.

Now coming to the next aspect, your mother is a diabetic. Urinary tract infections are very common in diabetics, and so you will have to ensure and constantly monitor her blood sugar levels. You will HAVE to maintain a good blood sugar level, and keep it under control, or else the infections will recur/return.

Finally coming to the conclusion drawn by another doctor about a stone in the renal system, I would advice an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis to confirm this. Only if it is detected you need to worry about it, if not, it might either be absent or too small to cause any problems. You can then ignore it.

For now and the future, give your mother plenty of fluids. She might urinate more often, but this will help in expelling any small stone(s) present in her renal tract and prevent the stagnation of urine in her renal tract that can result in infections.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
