Have Heavy, Painful Period With Clots. Stopped Norethisterone. Is It Related?
Hi, I will be taking norethisterone for the first time as I am going on a hiking trip. As this is my first time on this pill, I've been reading alot about it online and saw that alot of women that have taken the pill complain about very long, painful and heavy periods with clots after stopping the pill. I already have very painful and heavy clotty periods even without the pill so i'm worried. Will my period be super long and excruciatingly painful after I stop? or what can I expect after I stop taking the pill? I will be taking the pills 3x/day for a whole 15 days for my climbing trip. Thank you.
Hello THanks for your query. Frankly unless it is very important, do not try and alter the schedule of your normal periods, specially as you already have long and painful periods. Generally, after stopping norethisterone, the withdrawal bleeding experienced is quite heavy and painful with clots. THis is because for the number of days that you are delaying your period with this medicine, the endometrium ( uterine lining ) keeps getting built up. Finally when the medication is stopped, this is shed off, leading to heavy, painful bleeding with clots. As you are going to take this medication for 15 days, yes, you can expect heavy bleeding thereafter. Take care.
