Have Atrial Fibrillation And Hypertension. Taking Sotalol, Digoxin, Losartan. Weight Gain Due To Sotalol?

I have occasional atril fibrillation , mild hypertension . I am on 1/2 of Sotalol at nightime. Digoxin , 325 mg Aspirin and Losartan. I have gained about 30 pounds. Have had trouble with blood pressure medicine, not helping, side effects etc., Losartain keeps it in 130 range most of time. Will Sotalol cause weight gain? Sometimes I have to take a half of sotalol in daytime.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
As sotalol is used for maintenance of normal sinus rhythm [delay in time to recurrence of atrial fibrillation ] in patient with symptomatic atrial fibrilationwho are currently in sinus rhythm.
Here I want to tell you that dose of sotalol should be modified when creatinine clearance is lower than 60 ml/minute, so please make sure that this should not go below this level.
Weight gain is not due to use of sotalol .
Losartan & digoxin are also not responsible for your weight gain.
In my opinion the condition of kidney is very important so get in blood for serum creatinine level , blood urea level .
As congestive heart failure may be the reason of weight gain .
Can confirm with your treating doctor.
At present without complete reports it is very difficult to evaluate any diagnosis.
Consult one more cardiologist and get his opinion.
Good luck. Dr. HET

Hello,
Although weight gain is a less common side effect of sotalol, you must be investigated for other common causes of weight gain.Hypothyroidsim is a very common cause of gradual weight gain and should also be looked into.
Thanks
