Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello nicholerounding
Welcome to HCM
It is very difficult to quit alcohol but it is possible if one has determination.

- first and foremost thing to quit alcohol is to have enough motivation, usually individuals seek help to quit but they leave the therapy just after 1 week only, so proper sustained motivation is necessary.
-second is to ascertain whether he need the detoxification program or not. If he is a mild to moderate drinker as 1-2 pegs per days then it is very easy, as he will suffer only minimal withdrawal symptoms or nil. But if he is heavy drinker more than 4-5pegs per day then he may need treatment at some detoxification centre.
- first step in detoxification is to stop alcohol and to start replacement to avoid withdrawal, milder withdrawal resembles just like mild flu and severe withdrawal may manifest as tremors, seizure, delirium. Detoxification will protect from withdrawal.
- joining alcohol anonymous group is a good idea.
So be assured and motivate him for quitting.
All the best
Hope I cleared your doubt
