Has Soft Hydrocele On Left Side, Expanded Below The Penis, Uncomfortable. Ultrasound Done. When To Be Examined?

My husband (age 60) has a hydrocele on the left side. He saw his urologist 8 days ago, and had an ultrasound. The doctor was on vacation this week, and meanwhile the hydrocele, which was hard and firm, has softened--but only because it appears to have expanded to the skin below his penis.
It's about the size of a grapefruit, and very uncomfortable. When does it become an emergency?

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
When diagnosis is there it is very easy to take proper treatment .
In your husband case , consult a surgeon and he will decide the line of treatment .
1 Tapping is one such treatment and few patient get relief .
2 Surgery is the next option and if your treating surgeon advise , get its surgery.
In my opinion hydrocele is not an emergency until it is secondary in nature.
So consult a surgeon and get an operation , a very easy task.
