Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 60 yrs old and just discovered a new hard knot on my wrist . It wasn t there yesterday. It sits directly above the line of where my wrist and hand meet and it follows my thumb angle. What's startling is that there has been no external injury causing the bump or lump. What could cause such a sudden appearance? It doesn't move around but feels like a cyst. I suppose I should have it looked at.
From the description of this knot, it sounds like a synovial cyst. This occurs when there is a weakness in the surrounding joint joint and let the synovial capsule to protrude out and cause this swelling. It is generally painless and progressively increases in size. It is more common in elderly. Trauma can be at the origin of this but not necessarily.
Getting it looked at is not an emergency. Plan and get it looked at at your convenience. I hope you find this helpful and provides valuable information for you to act on. I wish you good health. Dr. Ditah, MD
