Had Spinal Fusion Previously. Diagnosed With Minor Stenosis In The Area. Caused By Ankles That Were Sprained Previously?

I am 40 years post L4-S1 spinal fusion with a long history of extreme athletic achievements since the fusion (auto-graft- no hardware in 1973). 11.5 ft standing broad jump and 30 in. plus vertical. Any way I have been Dx some minor stenosis in fusion site 2010 that I believe may have caused some surface numbness in left calf over right calf. I don't know if 2 dozens plus left sprained ankles have caused me trouble in performing toe raises to left side only, or if it is stenosis. Any thoughts?

Hello,

Thank you writing to us,

I see that you have been operated long ago with spinal fusion and even after that have been active in sports,
Now you have surface numbness in left calf area, which can only be attributed to the spinal stenosis diagnosed recently, It can not be due to ankle sprains.

In Spinal canal stenosis, the space for the nerve to exit from the spine in to the leg becomes less, which causes compression of nerves, which in turn gives tingling and/ or numbness in the area that particular nerve supplies.

I hope I have been able to solve your query well,

Feel free to contact me for further questions,

Regards,

Dr Merchant
