Had High Temperature, Viral Infection, Dehydrated. On Calpol. What Is Going On?
My 14 month old son has a temperature of over 39 (over 40 at times) and isn't coming down despite regular doses of calpol and calprofen. GP checked him over today and diagnosed a viral infection. However just spoken to out of hours tonight and they recommended taking to A and E if the temp persists and doesn't respond to meds. He is taking fluids and is not dehydrated. He is sleeping at the moment and I'm waking him to give meds and fluids. How long should I leave it before taking him in?
For fever you can continue calpol in prescribed dose.
If there is high grade fever you can give tepid sponging with lukewarm water.
Maintain his hydration by giving plenty of oral fluids.
Viral fevers may take 3 to 5 days to subside.
If the fever is persisting beyond this duration or child developed any new symptoms consult your Pediatrician for re examination and for investigations if required.
