Had Fibroids. Vaginal Hysterectomy. Will It Affect Lubrication During Sex? Time Needed For Recovery?

I am planning to get a vaginal hysterectomy in August, I have suffered from Fibroids for years, and am ready to be done with that. They are only taking the uterus. I have been told my uterus is big, and you can feel then through the abdomen. It is the size of a 3 month pregnancy. I have been told I need 2 weeks of down time, and I have planned for that-then I will need to get back to my teaching job (only 2 days a week). I have a few questions-is 2 weeks of recovery enough? During those 2 weeks recovery, will I be able to get up and around, make meals, light cleaning? Drive? I am wondering about my sex life after this procedure. I am newly married and very sexually active-will my sex drive wane? Will I about lubrication, will I need to use products for that now?

Hello.

I understand your concern and all your doubts are quite standard, I shall try to help you with the answers you require.

Any surgical procedure in a hospital requires hospital stay, mainly for preparation (prior to surgery) and rehabilitation (post-surgery). Rehabilitation post-surgery will include initial recovery that will contain slight movements/mobility, visiting the toilet without help and being able to pass urine and your bowels. It will also include primary care for the surgical wound, that will best prevent infections.

Once these goals are attained you will be discharged and sent home. You will find it a little difficult to move around initially, but it is only uphill from there on. With each passing day you will get more mobile, and yes, 2 weeks are quite sufficient for you to get back to your routine. But, it is important for you to get as much bed rest during this period as possible which is why I would advise against the cleaning, driving, and other chores. You may slowly initiate these activities, but give your body at least 7-10 days to heal and recupperate.

Sexual activity might be a little challenged and as rightly asked by you, lubrication might be affected. For this, every patient is prescribed hormonal supplements and even estrogen creams. These will help retaon your libido and lubrication; making your sexual life as good as it was prior to surgery.

Hope this helps.

Take care.
