Had Fell And Hurt Knee. Hurts To Bend Knee. Healing Time?

Hello. I fell and I hurt my knee. I went to get an X-ray; there is no bone damage. It has been a week and there is now no more swelling. I hit the side of my knee and there is a bruise there. It hurts went I bend my knee back and to lift my knee very far up (ie. when I walk up the stairs) I'm a runner and I have been resting as best as I can. What do you think it may be? How long approx. do injuries like this take to heal?

Hello,
thanks for using health care magic

It is interesting to know that your x-ray shows no bone damage as bone damage could be severe, causing functional impotence and requires a longer time to heal.

Haven ruled out bone trauma and with the duration and severity of your injury, it is more likely that you had a trauma of one of your ligaments/tendons at your knee level. Trauma of ligament/tendon is very painful, swelling almost immediately and taking a considerable time to heal.

The duration required for the healing of ligament/tendon trauma is variable and in severe cases can take up to 6weeks before an appreciable healing can take place. In less severe cases a week or two could be okay. However, conditions that favor healing have to be laid down;
-adequate rest is necessary i.e. avoiding to use the injured part,
-splinting could be done to immobilized
-adequate feeding etc.

Hope this helps you.
Best regards
Dr Achuo
