Had Epidural Hematoma Requiring Neurosurgery. Smokes Marijuana. Is My TBI Enough To Qualify Me For Medical Marijuana?

I suffered an epidural hematoma 8 months ago, requiring neurosurgery to put a titanium plate in my skull (the scar runs from below my ear, up and over the side of my skull ending in the center of my hairline just above my forehead). I have been a habitual smoker of marijuana since before the incident (guitar to the side of my head), and have continued to smoke into my recovery, as I find it helps with my chronic headaches. My neurosurgeon nd neurologist are unopposed to my smoking, so my question would be: is my TBI enough to qualify me for medical marijuana? I have been on I think 8 different medicines while recovering, none of which have helped dampen the pain so much as marijuana.

Hi,

As far as I know, your injury will not qualify you for medical marijuana. Moreover, epidural hematoma is a head injury but not a traumatic brain injury, as the duramater is not breached and the inner structures not damaged. However, migraine is an indication for medical marijuana in some states and if your head aches are indeed chronic and are migrainous in nature, you may ask your doctors if they would be willing to prescribe you marijuana.

Best wishes.
