Had a fall from horse and landed on back which is sore and painful. Worried about internal damage?

I fell of a horse a couple of days ago at a fast canter and flew off and landed flat on my back - I am now very sore indeed and have pain on mr right side just below my ribs in the soft area as opposed to the bone area- I am thinking that the action of falling flat on my back may have bruised my organs that sit in fron of my back but it is quite painful and am worried possible internal damage? I can walk ok (apart from the sprained ankle ) the pain is the lower part of my back above my waistline right the way across. What would you advise visit the ER?

I am sorry that you had this injury.

Yes, my suggestion for you would be to visit the ER. More importantly, you should get an ultrasound scan of the abdomen to rule of possible damage to the internal organs. The area that you specify signifies the renal angle or the area where the kidney lie. So, please check if your kidneys are fine on the ultrasound. In addition, we can get images of spleen, liver and intestines as a whole.

Blunt trauma of abdomen like in your case needs careful evaluation and management.

I wish you speedy recovery.

Hope this helps.

Hello there,
welcome to health care magic,
if there is any mechnical pain it will aggrevate on weight bearing positions..... otherwise the pain can be experienced during rest also.
Some non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs(diclofenac) can be helpful to reduce your pain..... But some antacid tablets must be taken along with it.
In case of pesence of any local injury/ sprain/ strain PRICE protocol (Protection/rest/ice/compression/elevation) will be helpful....

wish you a good health soon....
