I have a result of HIV RNA -showing "non detectable" /and the detection limit as it is mentioned on the result as being of 40copies/ml.This test was performed three weeks after the contact.Could it be possible as the result to be falsely negative and ,in reality , to be positive ?Thank you very much in advance for your answer.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

HIV RNA test is not a diagnostic test, but prognostic test to assess the progress of the disease or the response to treatment. HIV DNA is the test done to detect HIV infection or to rule out the same.
HIV RNA undetectable level denotes either absence of the disease or the viral load is under well control.
Moreover, both HIV DNA or HIV RNA are normally detects HIV1 infection which is common and it could not detect HIV2 infection which is very rare. Ofcourse HIV2 specific DNA and RNA tests are available in certain big centers on demand.
