Got Ear Cleaned Up By Paediatrician. Dried Blood In Inner Ear. No Pain, Discomfort. Eardrum Damaged?

my daughter is 15 yrs old went to the pediatrician yesterday and the doctor used a long Q-tip to clean her right ear, I saw my daughter s eyes got wide like she was in pain while the doctor was trying to get the wax out. I said aloud are u in pain? and I saw the Q-tip (end of it ) had blood . the doctor dismissed it saying her ear was senstive, just this evening I noticed my daughter had lot of dried blood to the edge of the inner ear . She didnt complain of any pain or discomfort to the ear. Is her eardrum damaged?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
hello and welcome to HCM,

You daughter seems to have injured the ear canal while cleaning

Since it is just mild bleed, it may not cause much pain and in all likelihood would not have ruptured the drum which would have been a cause for concern.

Nevertheless, since a bleed has been notice you need to be sure that everything is fine and if there is secondary infection a proper treatment should be initiated.

Consult an ENT as soon as possible to be on the safe side and have a clearer picture

Avoid putting anything including ear buds into the ear

Never attempt to clean the ear yourself as the skin around the canal and the drum are very delicate structures

Keep the ear dry for the next one week at least so that the injury can heal without any difficulty

Just remember that even in the best of the hands since the ear canal is very very sensitive and delicate some amount of bleed can occur. But if the drum is not injured you have nothing to worry about.

take care
