Getting nasty cough and heavy chest. How to get relief?

I was cleaning my bathroom alternating a bleach spray, wipe it down, then ammonia spray. It is possible they may have mixed. I now have a pretty nasty cough and heavy chest. No fever , no vomiting , no blue nail beds... I have read on some sites that I should see a doctor right away (ie: go to ER) and I have read on others to just drink warm liquids and take cough medicine . Suggestions?

Oncologist Dr. Robert Galamaga's  Response
Hello and thank you for your question.

You're absolutely correct that mixing bleach with ammonia can be very problematic. This mixture can create chlorine gas. This is toxic to the lungs. In most cases gentle supportive care is all that needs to be done. In your case I recommend that you see your doctor as soon as possible for a good physical examination and consultation to make sure you're lung function remains normal.

Thanks again for sending your question.
