Getting Dots Of Blood In My Sputum. Recovered From Chest Infection. Comes Out Only After Eating. No Other Symptoms. Why The Blood Is Coming Out And From Where?

Hi. I have been getting dots of blood in my sputum , which comes out clear. the dots of blood appear bright red sometimes and dark brown at others and also pinky red aswell. Its been just over a week that I have recovered from a chest infection and now these dots of blood are appearing in clear phlegm . its really wierd but it happens after ive eaten. throughout the times when i dont eat, just clear phlegm will come out. i havent got any other symptoms like chest pain , difficulty breathing etc etc. i dont smoke . where could this blood be coming from? the lungs or the throat?

Hi,

Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

Since you do not have symptoms related to lung involvement the chances of the
Bleed to be from lung is remote.

A very common presentation where in due to fragile mucosa in the throat there would
be blood in sputum. Such condition is seen in frequent sore throat or in vitamin C deficiency.

Do discuss with your treating doctor about the above considerations and get examined to confirm the
Underlying condition.

Wish you good health.

ENT Specialist Dr. Praveen kumar's  Response
hello asma, coughing out blood/presence of blood in sputum is called haemoptysis.you have mentioned that you have recovered from a chest infection.haemoptysis can occur in respiratory tract infections.this blood is most probably coming from the lungs.you have to consult a physician or a pulmonologist, who will most probably order a few tests like a chest x ray,a haemogram[a simple test to detect an acute infection],sputum testing to detect bacterial infection, he may also ask for a bronchoscopy.you will be given an antibiotic to clear this infection.stay calm,do not neglect this symptom, consult a doctor asap.dont worry you will be fine.
