Gastric Reflux Due To Which Have A Bad Throat. Laryngiscopy Showed Congested Arytenoids. Are There Any Side Effects Of Taking PPI For So Long?

I am suffering from gastric reflux due to which I have a very bad throat for the last 6 months. Have been on PPI twice a day for last 5 months and have done lifestyle changes like eating small meals, not lying down after meals, eating last meal at least 3 and half hrs before bed, not eating any trigger foods that cause acidity like tomatoes, fried chic mint etc. in spite of above line of treatment my throat is always irritated and feels like a permanent burn in my throat. Laryngoscopy showed congested arytenoids.i don t know what else I can do and am worried about side effects of taking PPI for so long. Also I don t see how this problem can be resolved at all or do I have to live like this for the rest of my life? Pls help. By the way I never had any symptoms of reflux like heartburn etc, except I had felt two or three episodes 6months ago of food coming upto my throat after meals.

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

From the information provided, you are apparently suffering from H.pylori (a type of bacteria) infection of stomach and early part of small intestine. The constant soreness of throat is due to recurrent regurgitation of acid into the throat.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that your take a COMBINATION of:-

* 2 weeks' course of anti-H.pylori therapy (it is available in the form of kits); followed by, a PPI, such as, Rabeprazole or Esomaprazole for ANOTHER 3-4 months.

* A Pro-kinetic drug, such as, Metoclopamide or Domperidone- one tablet THRICE daily, 30 minutes BEFORE each main meal, for ONE MONTH. It will prevent reflux of stomach contents.

* A 2 weeks' course of Probiotics, such as Saccharomyces boulardii or Lactobacilli, thrice daily

* A deworming course with Albendazole 400mg daily for 3 days; repeated monthly.

I am certainly confident that you will be cured of gastric reflux/problem completely AND permanently in 3-4 months time.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable treatment as advised.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE all doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
