Five Year Old With Recurrent UTIs. Treatment?

Hi, my daughter who is going to be five next week, has a recurrent UTI (e.Coli). I have given her sample for culture testing today waiting for a result after treatment. What next steps would you recommend we take once we get the results, since the treatment is not working properly. (she had five UTI since her 3rd birthday- and been treated. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
The causes of persistence of UTI despite taking treatment for long duration are:

1. Inadequate dosage & duration of antibiotic therapy
2. Inappropriate antibiotic used
3. Underlying cause of UTI is not being treated, which is causing the recurrence.

Appropriate measures include:
1. Proper physical examination by an Urologist.
2. Discuss the proper dosage & adequate duration of antibiotic therapy with the treating physician.
3. Urine culture & sensitivity test will be helpful in selecting the proper antibiotic.
4. Investigation like Ultrasound scan of abdomen & pelvis will be helpful in detecting the underlying cause of UTI.

Wishing her a good health.
Take care.
