Finger Injury Due To Fall. X-ray Showed No Fracture. Swollen, Cannot Bend
Hello,
I fell in a river and hurt my midddle finger on my right hand two weeks ago. In particular my second knuckle. They said that it was not broken but have recommend that i get it x rayed again and if that turns up nothing then to get a bone scan of the fnger failing they will recommend me to a surgeon. My question is how much further damage is being done by waiting for all of these xrays. (it is in a metal splint. ) It has been x rayed twice already. it is still quite swollen and I cannot bend it
Some X rays especially green stick fractures do not show up on the X ray at the first instance. Metal splint is required to keep the finger immobile and provide rest. This will allow the broken fragments to unite. Union of the two fragments will show up the fracture line. As the soft tissue swelling and pain subsides, the fracture will be visualized better. So, keep the splint, painkillers and repeat X rays.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
