Fall on the back, later had numbness in arms, bump on the head, headache. What symptoms should be looked out for?

I slipped and fell flat on my back. I don t remember the fall but was able to talk after a minute, my arms were numb (pins and needles) and I got a very big lump on the back of my head. It s been 24 hours and I have a headache . I m not dizzy, or nauseous. I don t have insurance so I m hoping I won t need to go in. What symptoms should I worry about if they occur?

Dear patient,

The mechanism of the fall was pretty dramatic, and therefore, I think that at a minimum, you should have a provider see you, and document no neurologic abnormalities after the trauma, not necessarily obtaining head imaging if everything is OK after 24 hours. The main red flags after head trauma are difficulty with vision, speech, memory, gait, incontinence, somnolence, worsening nausea or vomiting or headache; however, there may be more slight manifestations of neurologic damage.
