Fall In Tub, Bruise, Knee Pain. What Medicine Can Be Taken?

My husband slipped in the tub and was able to prop himself using his side section (Rib). There are no concussion , no broken bones, just a nasty bruise that is starting to darken and a pained knee . We have a doctor s appt tomorrow but we re just wondering what medicine he can take and if it s hot or cold compress? Thank you very much!
