Experiencing Difficulty In Walking Due To A Fractured Tailbone

Hello - a concusssion mishap caused a hard fall which on x-ray showed a fractured tailbone oblique. Six months later, I still have tingling pain into my left foot and toes. Most uncomfortable. I am 76, had a spinal fusion two years ago, have type 2 diabetes, am 5 4-1/2 tall, weigh 180 lbs, am large-boned and don t look my age and weight. Will this tingling ever go away. I have difficulty walking and raising my RIGHT leg. Should I be exercising/walking a much as I can, etc. Would water aerobics be best. Thanks. June G.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description of your symptoms, I suspect that you might have injured the lumbar spinal nerves due to fall that are producing symptoms of tingling pain and loss of muscle power in right leg.

An MRI scan is needed to know the extent of injury to the lumbar nerves. I personally dont think that only Exercises & water aerobics will be of much help in alleviating your symptoms.

I suggest you to consult a spine surgeon for a detailed evaluation and further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
