Enlarged Lymph Nodes In Neck. Ordered CT Scan. What Is The Prognosis?
my husband has just had test for enlarged lymph nodes in his neck. one of the test has come back as on the wrong side of clear. our doctor has ordered ct scans and blood tests and has recommended surgery to remove the enlarged nodes. my husband has not had any symptoms that we know of. what are the symptoms and what is his prognosis? apparently he has had swollen nodes for about 9 months, but just now they consider it urgent. he is 74 years old, non drinker and has not smoked for about 30 years.

You have not mentioned what test has done and what is the result, but in my opinion, he has gone through a FNAC of single lymph node and in report there might be a possibility of metastatic carcinoma (secondaries neck).
But without a histo-pathological examination, can not be able to say anything with confidence, so he is planning to find out the primary carcinoma whether is it in lungs? which can be happens in ex-smokers also, and he will also determine the spread of the disease for fitness to surgery and mode of management i.e. surgery or radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
So he is planning for excision biopsy of the lymph nodes for confirmation of the diagnosis and CT scan for the finding of primary source of carcinoma.
Prognosis is not good if carcinoma finds with secondaries.
Over all my opinion is totally hypothetical, because you have not given much and proper information.
