Hi and welcome to HCM. Thank you for your query.
So you shouldnt treat your medical findings, you should treate the disease it there is some. These are moderately elevated level caused in most cases by alcohol drinking. But beside this its elevation is common found in many disorders must most usualy is viral, autoimmune or toxic liver damage. The most common liver disorders is fatty liver which can be found in healthy people, but usually is resulting from elevated blood lipids, overweight and elevated blood sugar. If ultrasounds didnt find anything and viral markers are negative then you have no reason to be concerned. YOu should treat it by changingdieatary and lifestyle habbits. Do exercise, avoid alcohol, smoking, fats, fast food and carbonated drinks. Eat more fruit and vegetables, boiled meat and follow some of hepatoprotective diets. Findings usually improves on such measures. If not, then some medicines can be presribed, but I suggest to go step by step. If you dont have any symptoms then this really nothing to worry about.
Wish you good health.

Hello Benjie,

Causes of high SGPT include:
1. Liver inflammation
2. Injury to the muscles
3. Myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure
4. Acute kidney failure
5. Certain hepato toxic drugs if taken for a long time

So, it will be better to consult a Gastroenterologist & get a proper physical examination done to find out the exact cause.
Based on that appropriate management step could be taken.
Investigations like Ultrasound scan of the abdomen will be helpful.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Thanks & take care.

General Surgeon Dr. Grzegorz Stanko's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such result of SGPT is only slightly above the norm. When there is acute liver disease, its value reaches 1000.
So such result can be caused by fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol, medicines (pain killers), fatty liver, gallstones. Other less possible reasons are liver viral infection, liver tumors, bile ducts tumors.
I suggest you to have abdominal ultrasound to rule out bile ducts problems, liver tumors and gallstones.
If you have had any surgeries recently or blood transfusions, HbS-Ag and Anti-HCV should be tested.

Avoid fatty foods, alcohol, spicy foods and repeat your liver tests in a month or so.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
