Due For Aortic Valve Replacement. Does Mechanical Or Tissue Method Affect The Ability To Have Healthy Children ?

hello I am a 21 year old male, very active and getting married in May 2014. I am having aortic valve replacement in a month and the big question is should I go mechanical or tissue. I had heard about Coumadin effecting my ability to have healthy children. I play a lot of sports and want to make sure I can have healthy kids, so I was leaning towards the tissue valve, but I don t want to be cracked open again in 10 years.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hi,

I read very carefully your concern and would like to say:
If I was your cardiologist i would council you the mechanical valve.

This is because the coumadin has unwanted effects on pregnancy only to women. Since you are a men you shouldn't worry and everything is going to be OK.

Hope i answered your question?
