Double Umbilical Hernia - Complications after Surgery

On March 17, 2011 I had surgery for a Umbilical Hernia and in surgery the Doctor found that I Had A double Umbilical Hernia. The nurse told be to remove the dressing the next day and take a shower. I noticed that the left side was protruding out and did not look like the other side. Within 10 days the left side hurting and still protruding and right side was not hurting and seem to be healing . 03/27/2011 - I called the doctors office left a message explaining what was going on. 03/28/02011 - The next day they called me back and asked that I come in right away, which I did and seen a different surgeon . She cut a slit applied pressure and man a whole alot of fluid came out. She then installed a wick and told me to remove it the next day in the shower. The next day I woke up in so much pain. It felt like someone was continuing to stab me over and over. After about 4 hours, I went into the shower and pulled the wick out and alot of fluid came out and when I pressed on my stomach alot of blood then came out. 03/30/2011 - Went back to see the surgeon (That operated on me) and he decided to cut me open above were he repaired my double hernia. He said that I had a void (Because I was over weight) that he was going to have to let me heal from the inside out. From 03/30/2011 to 04/04/2011 - I had to go to the hospital everyday including weekends where the surgeon changed out the gauze inside me. It started turning green (Getting Infected) and ask me to get someone at night to do the same. I hired a CNA to change out my wound and now its been 2 weeks. The opening is starting to heal but the inside is not. The surgeon is now recommending that I have a second surgery to open up the slit so I don t close on the outside and have the void inside get a full body infection. I would like to know why I m truling not healing and what might be wrong with me & Etc. Did the doctor forget to do something or did he do something wrong? Its now 0418/2011 - My work insurance has not approved me for a second surgery and I m getting very worried. Lenbella

Hello and welcome to healthcare forum.
Fluid collection in the wound due to fat dissolution is many times seen in fatty patients.
This collected fluid is very good growing medium for bacteria thats why your wound got infected.
So, whatever happened with you after surgery is many times seen in fatty patients operated for umbilical hernia.
Best wishes for speedy recovery from your problem.

I am 27 years old. At 21 I had double inguinal hernia surgery. At the time of the surgery I was 170lbs. Since the surgery I maintained the same eating and workout regimen. Within 2 months of surgery I was 200lbs and within 4 months my weight leveled out between 220 and 225. Over the last 6 years I have done every workout and diet under the sun and the lowest I ve gotten was while I was deployed in Afghanistan. I dipped down to 214 after 4 months of deployed life. During this time I also had an Umbilical hernia. Is there a possibility of a surgery complication that hasn t been fixed? Is there any reason why I still can t get my weight down?

I have an umbilical hernia, wondering if it is better to live with it versus the risks of complications with the surgery and especially complications post op with hernia repairs. I also feel it is best, if possible, to avoid foreign or man-made objects internally. Eventually it might get to bad I will have no choice. I don t know if these generally enlarge, or get more uncomfortable, painful.?

I made lots of examinations when i made my first x ray i was diagnosed with hernia and than when i did my next x ray there was no hernia which confused me even more...i did also swalowing of that tube and it showed lots of acidity the doctor evan asked me if i was eating somthin that morning because it was acidic or somth while i havent eaten for 12 h... I have taken controloc for a month and it didnt help me,i also tok lansoprasole for a month and it didnt help me either I was also thested for pylori which was negative The most frustrating part about this is that am tired evry day and short of breath and if somtimes is a little better in morning is all back to square one..tired and feeling of pressure abdomen and short of breath and its like that throughout the whole day so its not a atack of some kind. I recently had surgery for a hernia and have been very constipated the 3 following days. Today my stomach began to get bloated to the point of not being able to walk. I have been eating a lot of fiber trying to aid in a bowel movement but have not had much luck. Do I need to be eating more food overall? I have not been hungry lately because of stomach pains.. was wondering what else I could do to help get 'regular' again

Hi, I was asked to get a breath test which would assist in diagnosis of any hernia s or irregularities related to the GI tract. What would be prescribed on the pre-req form? is it a separate test requiring a separate pre-req form or do you need to be referred to a specialist by your GP?

My husband had a double hernia repaired almost two weeks ago and now he's breaking out in a rash that's very itchy. Benadryl seems to help, but doesn't completely eliminate the problem. Could it be a reaction to the internal disolvable stitches? We've ruled out everything else he could be reacting to.
